Have you ever ran into a problem with reading text or want a close-up? Try pressing the control key while scrolling to zoom-in when using your mouse. To scroll down on a page, remove your finger from the control key and just scroll down.

Easy Volume Control

By default, pressing the F4 and F5 keys will make a click sound for each keypress that moves volume down or up, respectively. But holding down the shift key while pressing F4 or F5 suppresses the click. (You can also turn it off permanently in System Preferences, Sound, Sound Effects. By the way, you can also open Sound Preferences panel directly with Option-F5.)

Show only one window

Hold the option key while selection an application in the dock, and all other windows will be hidden automatically, it may not always work with Finder windows.

View all files in Stacks

To view all files from a stack hold the command button while clicking on the stack which will take you to the root folder where the files for that stack is stored.

Set exact volume levels

For those who like a perfect and exact volume level, this is for you. While holiding the shift and option key along with your designated volume key at the same time your volume will be broken up into smaller pieces.

Close Widgets

While in Dashboard, instead of clicking a + button at the bottom left corner to get the X for closing a widget. All you have to do is mouse over the widget you want to close and at the same time hold the alt/option key and the X will appear. This trick works with Tiger as well as Leopard.

Finder title bar trick

Did you know that you can click and drag the little folder icon in a Finder window’s title bar to copy/move the folder to another location? A secondary click on the title or the folder icon brings up a context menu listing the parent folders of the currently selected folder.

Widgets on your Desktop

Shrink PDF

In Preview you can shrink the size of a PDF. To do this open the PDF in Preview. Select “Save As…” from the File menu. In the dialog that appears you will see a pop-up menu labelled “Quartz Filter”. Choose “Reduce File Size” and when you save the PDF it will be much smaller than the original. There is some image quality loss so be sure to keep a copy of the original in case you aren’t happy with the results.

Hide Dock

Option-Command-D hides the dock and whenever you mouse over at the bottom of the screen it appears again.

Empty Finder Window

The quickest way to get to an empty desktop or Finder window is to use the keyboard shortcuts, Command-up arrow which skips windows to view different windows as an integration with Spaces.

Auto Quit: Printer

Safari Surfing Trick

Have you ever been in such a hurry to get to the bottom of the page or top but can’t find a Back to Top link. Well, now every webpage you visit using Safari has one, sort of. Hit Command and up arrow to go up and down to scroll down. Easy as pie!

Safari “Reopen All Windows From Last Session”

It doesn’t get simpler than this. If Safari seems to crash or by accident you exit Safari just go to History in the menu bar and click Reopen All Windows From Last Session or if you prefer Reopen Last Closed Window.

File Renaming in Finder

In previous versions of Mac OS X when you renamed a file it would delete the file extension then you may have forgotten by then what it WAS but Leopard makes it smart and easy, just click on the file and hit enter and you can type in the new name.

Force Quit

Dictionary??

Included with Mac OS X is an Oxford English Dictionary which if you browse Finder through your Applications folder you may just find it. But if you are browsing in Safari and come across a word that you need the definition for just use the shortcut Ctrl-Command-D while mousing over the word. A dialog box appears highlighting the word with the definition below. The trick only works in specific applications.
